July 16 I have a corny motto: Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, have few if any expectations, show up with a positive attitude, and sometimes magic happens! A recent day tested this when we prepared for high winds, lumpy bumpy seas, along with the strongest currents of the month. We had reports Read the full article…

Today we had an excellent tour aboard the Odyssey. We headed south out of Friday Harbor down San Juan Channel against the tide. We saw lots of seals and sea birds on our way out to the whales. We were lucky to catch up with them before False Bay and we encountered the J’s. There Read the full article…

Name That Baby! Well, today was one of those days that fall in the category of a 5% chance of not seeing orcas. The two groups that were known to be in the area headed out this morning and were out of our range by the time that we left the dock. That is okay Read the full article…

Summer is here in the San Juans, and this week we’ve actually had the weather to prove it! It was a toasty 84 degrees as we left the dock today, and we were all quite grateful to have the breeze coming off the water to cool us down. What a perfect day to be out Read the full article…

Granny, J-2, stills breaches at 99 years old!! She showed us her power and place as the grand matriarch of J-Pod (and the whole Southern Resident Community of Killer Whales)today, as she lead the pod south from Turn Point. I wonder that she was communicating to the families to hurry up- catch up! Since the Read the full article…

When we met up with members of our southern resident community Read the full article…

What a surprise for our guests to experience the vast array of wildlife here in the Salish Sea, starting right at the walk down the dock to the Odyssey, where we see sea anemones, shrimp, and nudibranchs right on the pilings! An opportunity for the naturalists to weave the story of all these animals, they Read the full article…

We had a great group of passengers today! For most folks it was their first time out whale watching and for many their first trip to the San Juan Islands. We had reports of whales in the area as we were leaving Friday Harbor, but we had a huge flood tide coming in and the Read the full article…

We left the dock this afternoon crossing our fingers that we would catch up with our Southern Residents, on a once again gorgeous sunny day in the San Juan Islands. WOW! The wonder of the wildlife in the Salish Sea is ever changing on any given day! Today transient killer whales hunted right outside Friday Harbor by Brown Island. So we didn’t have to go far to start seeing whales. The family of 32 year old T-100 with her 3 offspring; 13, 8, and 4 years Read the full article…

What a beautiful day it was in the sunny San Juans! We’d gotten reports that our resident killer whales were spread out all along the W side of SJI, and so we went south to meet up with a group not far off Cattle Point. The sun’s glares made it difficult to ID many individuals, Read the full article…
